Why Summer Here Feels Like a Love Letter to the PNW, 4th of July

by HOME REAL ESTATE Gena Graham

There’s just something about the Fourth of July around here — it kicks off summer in a way that feels straight-up cinematic. Flags on porches, bikes wrapped in red, white, and blue streamers whizzing by, coolers cracking open, neighbors laughing under string lights, kids chasing each other with sparklers like tiny fireworks of their own. You stand there, take a deep breath, and it hits you: this is why we live here.

We squeezed every last drop out of the past week. It played out like a highlight reel of all the reasons we choose this life — this little corner of the Pacific Northwest that never stops showing off.

It started at Lake Sacajawea, winding along those shaded, storybook paths with an iced coffee in hand. Families spread out picnic blankets under sweeping willows, kids fed ducks off the edge of the bridge, fishermen swapped stories from lawn chairs. The lake was buzzing with that laid-back Fourth energy — bursts of laughter, a stray pop of a firecracker in the distance, couples paddling by like the day couldn’t possibly be rushed.

And then there’s Kalama. Oh Kalama.
Where else do marina sunsets look like they were painted just for you? Where you can’t stroll the boardwalk without bumping into at least three people you know — all while live music spills out of local spots and boutique bags swing from wrists. We spent slow afternoons on the boat, the Columbia River breeze tangling our hair, docking for quick snacks and icy lavender lemonades that somehow tasted like pure summer. On the Fourth, the river lit up — boat flags dancing, far-off fireworks echoing down the water, kids waving from decks with sticky snow cone hands. It was vibrant and calm all at once, like Kalama always manages to be.

And you know we couldn’t let the week wrap without Ridgefield.
There’s something about a glass of Pinot on a sun-warmed patio that flips a switch in your brain straight to “life is pretty damn good.” Rolling vineyards stretching into the horizon, soft conversations drifting across tables, that golden hour glow that turns everyone’s laughter into something you want to bottle up and keep forever.

Honestly, the weather decided to flex right along with us. Bluebird skies, a playful breeze, warm enough to keep you outside from the first iced coffee to the last sparkler of the night.

So yeah — if it sounds like I’m bragging a little about where we live… guilty. Because this is what we get here. Not just on the Fourth, but all season long. Boating days that turn into dockside dinners, lake strolls that morph into impromptu neighbor meet-ups, backyard grills where the stories last longer than the food.

I hope your Fourth was full of lakeside hangs, spontaneous invites out on the water, backyard fireworks, and tiny, perfect moments that remind you why living beautifully local isn’t just a tagline — it’s the heartbeat of every single day we get to call this place home.
