Your Daily Dose of Happy: Tea Towels, Mugs & Celebrating the Old West Side

I’ve always believed that the smallest things can carry the biggest stories.

A tea towel.
A mug.
A design that sparks a smile every time you see it.

These may seem like simple, everyday items, but when you think about it, they’re also little storytellers. They reflect a sense of place, of community, of memory. And that’s exactly why I created this collection: not to sell, but to celebrate the Old West Side of Longview, WA — a neighborhood full of history, charm, and heart.

Where It All Started

It all began with a walk around our streets. I’d stroll past historic homes, old oak trees, local shops, and neighbors waving from their porches, and I’d think:

“There’s so much beauty here that deserves to be shared. There’s so much character, so many stories, and so much community pride.”

That’s when the idea sparked: why not create something that brings a little of this neighborhood into homes in a tangible, everyday way? Something people could use, display, and treasure — a small piece of the Old West Side they could hold onto, gift to friends, or give to family.

I wanted these items to feel intentional, thoughtful, and full of personality — the same personality that makes our neighborhood truly unique. Tea towels that hang in kitchens and catch the light, mugs that sit on counters or tables and make someone smile — these are small, functional pieces that carry big meaning.

Why “Happy Place”

“Happy Place” was inspired by a West Coast local artist whose work values feeling over perfection—the kind of art that doesn’t try too hard, but still stops you in your tracks because it feels familiar and real. That idea has always resonated with me, because homes work the same way. The most meaningful spaces aren’t the ones that look flawless on paper—they’re the ones that hold memories, routines, laughter, and a sense of belonging. Longview isn’t polished or predictable, and that’s exactly what makes it special.

As a real estate professional, branding is not an afterthought for me—it’s foundational. It’s how a story is told, how trust is built, and how value is perceived long before a buyer ever steps through the door. I’ve built my business around the belief that every neighborhood, every home, and every detail deserves to be represented with intention. My hyper-local approach is rooted in knowing the history behind the streets, the rhythm of the community, and what makes each pocket of Longview feel like home. That perspective shapes everything I do—from how I market listings and select imagery, to how I position homes in the market and advocate for my clients.

Bringing that one-of-a-kind, hyper-local lens into my branding directly impacts my real estate work. It allows me to elevate homes without stripping away their character, to tell stories without overproducing them, and to create marketing that feels authentic rather than generic. When branding is done right, it doesn’t just make something look beautiful—it changes how people feel, how they connect, and how they value a home. At the end of the day, selling real estate isn’t about transactions or templates. It’s about honoring the places that matter to people—and helping them pass their happy place on to the next chapter.

Finding Inspiration in the Old West Side

To create designs that truly felt “Old West Side,” I needed to slow down, walk the streets, and let the neighborhood tell me its own story. And trust me — it has plenty to say (I know cause I live in the neighborhood). 

The Old West Side isn’t merely a place to live. It’s a tapestry woven from history, character, and intentional planning. Positioned near the Columbia River and just 45 minutes from Portland ( Seattle only a couple hours away), the neighborhood was thoughtfully envisioned in 1923 as part of a meticulously designed city.

Here, the homes act like characters in their own novel. Craftsman bungalows with deep porches, Tudors with charming gables, dignified Colonial Revivals, the warm romance of Spanish Revival architecture, and those classic, inviting bungalows that feel grounded and timeless. Some Spanish Revival homes bring a touch of old-world elegance, while the simpler bungalows feel rooted and welcoming.

At the center of it all is Lake Sacajawea — not just a lake, but a landmark shaped by artistry. Designed in the 1920s by renowned landscape architects Hare & Hare, it’s a man-made masterpiece where shoreline curves, garden paths, and gentle water views blend into something calm and poetic.

As you wander the lake’s edge, you pass quiet footpaths, little islands, and charming bridges that feel like they belong in a fairy tale. One island is home to a serene Japanese Garden where bamboo sways, fish beneath the surface, and the world seems to hush for a moment.

And then comes one of the most whimsical signatures of The Old West Side: the squirrel bridges — all nine of them.

These tiny wooden crossings, perched high in the trees and stretched above quiet streets, were built decades ago to give neighborhood squirrels a safe way to travel from canopy to canopy. They’re clever, they’re charming, and they are unmistakably “Old West Side.”

What began as a quirky local idea has grown into a full-scale highlight. Locals point them out proudly, kids hunt for them like Easter eggs, and — unbelievably — visitors from around the country and the world have come specifically to see them. Travel bloggers feature them, photographers seek them out, and tourists wander our historic blocks hoping to catch one of our furry residents darting across a bridge.

These tiny structures have become our unofficial mascots — playful wooden reminders of the creativity, care, and character that define this community.

Why the Squirrel Bridges Matter

The squirrel bridges may be small, but they symbolize something big: this neighborhood cares about the details. We care about heritage. We care about charm. We care about those whimsical touches that turn a place into a story people want to be part of.

For locals, they’re a point of pride — a reminder that this community values thoughtfulness and personality. For visitors, they’re a delightful surprise, a reason to explore our tree-lined streets with cameras lifted and smiles ready.

They reflect exactly what makes the Old West Side magnetic: a place where history, imagination, and heart intersect in the most unexpected ways.

This blend — architectural richness, natural beauty, a dash of whimsy, and genuine community warmth — is the heartbeat behind our designs. I wanted each tea towel, mug, and piece in the collection to feel like it belongs here, born straight from the roots, character, and charm of the Old West Side.

Every sketch, every idea, and every design detail started right here in Longview, WA. I wanted these pieces to reflect our neighborhood’s story authentically. And to bring them to life, we partnered with a local West Coast artisan.

No factories. No mass production. Just a focus on quality, intention, and the craft of someone who truly cares.

And because we love celebrating our roots, we added a small but meaningful detail: EST. 1923, Washington. This isn’t just decoration — it’s a nod to the history and legacy of the Old West Side. It ties the past to the present, connecting generations through the items we use every day.
